A bitmap image is a collection of pixels which looks photo-realistic where as a vector graphic is a collection of lines and curves!
This means vector graphics look like art and when it is blown up it does not look pixelated but instead look arty.
You would use a raster image on a movie poster and you would use a vector graphic for something like text.
